Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders join Spider-Man sequel

Following their return in The Avengers: Infinity War post-credit scene, both Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders will be back for Spider-Man: Far From Home, the sequel to last year's film that rebooted the Wall Crawler under Marvel Studios starring Tom Holland.

Jackson (The Hitman's Bodyguard) and Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) will be joining Tom Holland for the next adventure in the titular webslinger's franchise, Spider-Man: Far From Home, according to Vulture. But lest we forget, the last time audiences saw Jackson and Smulders' characters, Nick Fury and Maria Hill, they had been dusted out of existence by Thanos just after calling Captain Marvel down to Earth to help using a special space pager.

Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly playing the film's primary villain, Mysterio. We talked about how Far From Home appears to be ditching the Iron Spider suit in favor of the other suit that Tony Stark designed for Peter Parker, which could indicate that the movie takes place before the events of Infinity War instead of after Avengers 4. From what we know so far the solution could come in the form of time travel, but we won't know much more until closer to the film. Spider-Man's sequel also confirms that Peter Parker did not die as shown towards the end of Infinity War.

Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is now filming in London, sees Peter Parker embarking on a global adventure and has been described as grander in scale and funnier than Spider-Man: Homecoming. Certainly a hint that Avengers 4 will change the course of the narrative.

This will be the first time Nick Fury and Maria Hill have encountered Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This news also means that 2019 will be an even bigger year than we thought for Jackson as Fury. That's why we can get a Homecoming sequel where Marvel Studios is involved and a Venom film that Marvel can consult on but is not tethered to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.
