Maggie McGuane told the Associate Press that she knew her mom died from suicide after she went to her mom's home on May 13, the day her mom died.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Kidder's daughter Maggie McGuane said the family decided to make her mother's suicide public because "it's important to be open and honest about the suicide so there's no cloud of shame".

It's noted that Margot Kidder struggled with mental illness throughout much of her life, which was made worse in a auto accident in 1990 that left her in debt and wheelchair bound for near two years. She wants to avoid any "cloud of shame".

Kidder's longtime friend, Joan Kesich, who found her body, called the actress and activist "fearless".

The AP also reports that the Superman actress was living in a state of chaos in her final years, as her attempts to provide refuge for those in need resulted in authorities being called to her home 40 times between August 2016 and her death.

McGuane urged people with mental illness to seek help.

Both Kidder and co-star Christopher Reeve, who played Superman, were relative unknowns when they got their leading parts, and neither saw many major roles afterwards.

Kidder was working until just prior to her death.

"The reality of my life has been grand and wonderful, punctuated by these odd blips and burps of madness", she said.

Kidder struggled with mental illness for a big chunk of her life, with events getting worse following a auto accident in 1990 that left her in debt and led her to using a wheelchair. She reprised the high-profile role in the three more films in the franchise.

Canadian-born Kidder also appeared in 1975's The Great Waldo Pepper with Robert Redford and 1978's The Amityville Horror.
