During a solar eclipse, the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow on planet Earth. The annual Perseid meteor shower will be peaking this Saturday and Sunday night.

Patience is also a virtue, with shooting stars tending to appear in clusters, followed by a lull.

The Perseids appear to emanate from between the constellations Perseus and Cassiopeia, but to catch them there's really no need to worry about which direction you're looking.

A cloudy night could still scupper your chances of spotting any meteors, however, so keep your eye on weather forecasts.
