Perseid meteor shower: 'TEARS of Biblical saint' to RAIN DOWN this weekend

The Perseids are one of the more active meteor showers on stargazers" calendars, producing an average of between 60 and 100 "shooting stars' an hour at their peak. While it's unlikely anyone living today will ever see this comet when it returns in 2126, we can still witness its effect on the solar system, and our planet, with the annual Perseids meteor shower. And conditions for viewing the meteors will be next to ideal this year.

The Perseids meteor shower is named after the Perseus constellation as it is the point (called the radiant) where the meteors appear to start from.

One of the most popular meteor showers of the year is expected to peak this weekend.

But, the Yankees will have to follow the very cliché approach everyone knows as "taking it one game at a time". Most importantly, however, the Yankees can start by being cautious with Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez .

When is the best time to see the meteor shower?

Though the shower hasn't yet reached its peak, observers have already reported spotting short bursts of high meteor activity (15 meteors per minute) at times, as well as significant meteor activity (~100) over several hours.

"All you've got to do is go outside, find a nice dark spot, lie flat on your back and look up", Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Environments Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, told Live Science previously.

If you're interested in the best possible views of the show should set up shop somewhere dark-with no light pollution or large buildings-where much of the sky is visible. The Slooh observatory will host a livestream of the shower starting at 5 p.m. ET on Sunday. "Comets and asteroids leave tiny bits of themselves in the orbital path that they take around the sun".

There's a unique opportunity to watch what may look like shooting stars putting on a show this weekend. We're pleased to announce we will be livestreaming the 2018 Perseids meteor shower peak in 4K ultra HD.

As the particles, ranging in size from a grain of sand to a pea, hit the Earth's atmosphere at 37 miles per second, they burn up and streak across the sky.

You might be able to catch a handful or maybe even a dozen meteors per hour in the weeknights leading up to the main event that will coincide roughly with the new moon (meaning the moon is absent from the night sky) on Saturday evening.
