About 5.4 million acres (2.2 million hectares) have been blackened in more than a dozen states during this year's extremely active wildfire season, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

A California man was charged with arson and other offenses on August 9 for allegedly starting the Holy Fire in Orange County, it was reported. Forrest Clark could face life in prison if convicted. He also faces sentencing enhancements for arson of multiple structures.

Meanwhile, a man charged with starting the fire refused to go to court Thursday.

Volunteer Fire Chief Mike Milligan, another resident of the canyon, said he's known Clark for 20 years and that he's had a history of mental illness and hospitalization.

During a Wednesday afternoon briefing, Orange County Fire Authority Battalion Chief Shane Sherwood said the fire began "around and near" Clark's cabin in Holy Jim Canyon.

He has also been charged with threatening neighbors - one of whom lost his cabin in the fire - and resisting arrest. "Later, he came back and told me what a jerk I was and everyone was after him". On July 21, he and Republican Rep. Tom McClintock visited the incident command post for the Ferguson Fire just outside of Yosemite National Park.

The Holy Fire was one of almost 20 blazes across California, which is seeing earlier, longer and more destructive wildfire seasons because of drought, warmer weather attributed to climate change and home construction deeper into forests. "We expect favorable weather conditions this weekend to help these efforts".
