New Jersey health officials report that the state has seen its first case of West Nile virus in a human this year.

Health experts say that they expect the incidence rate to only keep increasing as the scorching heat drags on, and are encouraging the public to protect themselves.

"The amount of virus we are detecting in mosquitoes is well above the historical average for this time of year and is also occurring earlier in the season than the average", Mark Clifton, the agency's director, said in the release.

West Nile fever generally resolves itself without treatment, but unsafe brain infections such as encephalitis or meningitis can develop in 1 out of 150 people, according to the press release. The health department suggests using DEET and other repellents, wearing long sleeves and trousers and avoiding being outside between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Although most people don't develop symptoms, approximately 20 percent of those infected will develop an infection known as West Nile Fever, according to the CDC. "These mosquitoes are most abundant in urban and suburban areas with dense human populations".
