100 Muslim women who wear the niqab or burqa have written to Brandon Lewis, chairman of the Conservative Party, demanding that Boris Johnson be kicked out of the party.

Under the Conservative Party's new code of conduct, when a formal complaint is made, the party have to investigate it.

A Conservative MP has said it is a "very dark day" for United Kingdom democracy and free speech over the independent investigation into Boris Johnson's comments about the burqa. He is instead more likely to be told.

Johnson resigned as Britain's top diplomat a month ago after claiming that Prime Minister Theresa May's proposals for a soft exit from the European Union were killing the dream of a clear, decisive split from the bloc.

Atkinson wrote in a letter to The Times: 'As a lifelong beneficiary of the freedom to make jokes about religion, I do think that Boris Johnson's joke about wearers of the burka resembling letterboxes is a pretty good one. "On that basis, no apology is required", he added.

If he is found to have breached the party's code of conduct, which includes a requirement for members to "lead by example to encourage and foster respect and tolerance", Mr Johnson could face suspension or expulsion, though it is thought unlikely.

A hundred Muslim women who wear the niqab or burka have signed a letter to Lewis, calling on him to withdraw the Conservative whip from Johnson and launch an independent inquiry into Islamophobia in the party.

"The burka and niqab are ugly tribal ninja-like garments that are pre-Islamic, non-Koranic and therefore un-Muslim". If this goes ahead, one Tory MP told The Times it would result in "civil war" in the party.

It was announced on Thursday that an independent investigation will take place into the comments made about the burqa by the former foreign secretary.

Mr Mitchell, who was chief whip in 2012 and global development secretary before that, told BBC Two's Newsnight: "I don't think he should apologise".

"This is quite an important issue about free speech and it's got nothing to do with the awful events that take place over Enoch Powell and the Rivers of Blood speech. Nevertheless we do so because we believe it is a means to get closer to God", it added.
