Brazil's Health Ministry says more than 1,200 people have been infected in a growing measles outbreak linked to cases imported from neighbouring Venezuela.

Two of the cases were reported in children under the age of one in New Haven county.

More than 100 people from 21 states have contracted measles in a nationwide outbreak, the CDC has announced. Symptoms show up in 10 to 14 days after exposure.

In addition to IN, the other states being monitored are Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, and Washington D.C. Measles is designated as notifiable at the national level under the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, meaning all cases must be reported to the CDC.

The CDC reports that measles often spreads after people who have been traveling return to the US.

Measles is a vaccine-preventable respiratory infection that can result in hospitalization, pneumonia, encephalitis and death. Numerous cases in the 2014 were associated with cases brought in from the Philippines, which experienced a large measles outbreak. One dose is about 93% effective at preventing the contagious disease if you come into contact with the virus. If it reaches a community where people were also not vaccinated, the disease can spread.
