McCain was in the public eye for decades, and as such, most Americans were familiar with and had opinions of the Senator. Plans call for McCain, a former Navy pilot, to be buried Sunday in the cemetery on the grounds of the U.S.

Mr McCain was one of Mr Trump's sharpest critics, and made clear in one of his final wishes that he did not want the president to attend his funeral.

The senator died Saturday at the age of 81 after a long battle with brain cancer.

"It is atrocious", Mr Mark Corallo, a former spokesman for Mr Trump's legal team and a long-time Republican strategist, said of Mr Trump's reaction to Mr McCain's death. Our words are too often cheap and imminently forgettable but John McCain paid our freight with his body and with his soul.

McCain stressed on the importance of unity in his farewell message to the country, read out by a family spokesperson on Monday.

"I doubt you could find a comparable situation where the president doesn't order the flag flown at half-mast until the funeral", said John Lawrence, history professor at the University of California's Washington Center.
