A senior citizen living in LaSalle County is the first person to die in IL this year of West Nile virus.

A dead crow found in Odanah this week tested positive for West Nile virus, prompting health officials to issue a special alert.

While most people infected with the virus show no symptoms, others can develop fever, headache, body aches and stiffness.

On Aug. 23, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said there were eight confirmed human cases of West Nile in Michigan. Since 2002, there have been 66 human cases of West Nile virus in Lake County, as well as two confirmed deaths.

Birds and horses can also contract the virus.

County health officials are urging residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites to lower their risk of contracting West Nile.

"We did get our first positive pool back in June, so that sort of gives you a sense of when we're first seeing the virus in the mosquito population".

Since the reported cases, the Harrison County Mosquito Control Center has increased their efforts to help decrease the amount of mosquitoes and larvae in the area. In some folks, severe illness collectively with meningitis or encephalitis, and even loss of life, can happen.
