Emergency personnel and police responded to reports of an active shooter situation near Fountain Square, today, in downtown Cincinnati.

Cincinnati police said on Twitter: "Police are investigating an active shooter / officer-involved shooting incident at Fifth Third Bank at 511 Walnut Street in lobby and loading dock".

Witnesses said they heard volleys of gunfire and one said that a woman was shot as she entered the bank building's lobby. Police responded within seconds, and four officers opened fire, bullets smashing through glass doors and the gunman falling to the floor, authorities said.

The newspaper said at least one of the victims was shot at an ice cream shop at the corner of the bank's headquarters.

Authorities have identified the gunman who allegedly killed three people and wounded two others at a bank in downtown Cincinnati as a 29-year-old OH resident.

So far, 36 states have reported salmonella cases, including Colorado and Oklahoma with two cases each. The illness onset dates for the outbreak patients range from March 3 through August 7.

"I was walking past the Chipotle and I had my headphones in when some woman stopped me and said 'You don't want to go to the square, we just heard gun shots, ' " he says.

Two more died at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

"He was actively shooting innocent victims, it appears, and our officers were able to kill him and stop the threat very quickly", Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley told a news conference. Two have since died, while one remains in critical condition and the other is in serious condition, the hospital said. It is home to retail stores, business officers, hotels and eateries.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the rapid police response probably prevented many more casualties.

Five victims were shot at the Fifth Third Center on Fountain Square Thursday morning. The company said in a statement posted to Twitter that it would "continue to work with law enforcement as we ensure the safety of our employees and customers".
