A spokeswoman for the Irish government told CNN the United States had postponed the visit citing scheduling reasons on the USA side.

The government needs to rebuild its relationship with the U.S. administration after President Trump postponed his November visit to Ireland over "scheduling issues", Micheál Martin has said.

Irish officials gave Trump the go-ahead in 2016 to build a wall around the golf course to protect it from increasingly unsafe storms and rising sea levels.

He told Irish radio station RTE on September 2: "There is an open invitation to the US President to visit Ireland at any time".

In an apparent communication breakdown, representatives of the Irish government said it was their understanding that Trump's schedule would not permit a visit in November.

A White House statement had said the Irish visit would "renew the deep and historic ties between our two nations".

As with his trip to the United Kingdom earlier this summer, a number of groups, supporting left-wing and environmentalist causes, had revealed plans to protest.

Irish activists had pledged to hold protests.
