Trump Accuses Democrats of Altering Statistics on Hurricane Deaths in Puerto Rico

With questions still swirling about its response a year ago to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, the Trump administration doesn't appear to have taken any chances in its preparations for Hurricane Florence, which made landfall early Friday morning on Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina.

Trump's Thursday morning tweets focused on a George Washington University study released last month that examined the toll from Hurricane Maria.

When Trump visited in October 2017, two weeks after the storm hit, the death toll at the time was indeed 16 people. As time went by it did not go up by much. He blamed the Democrats for making up false numbers to make him look "as bad as possible".

Mr Trump said people who died for any reason - "like old age" - had been added to the total.

Another frequent tactic for Republicans is stating that they have a policy of not commenting on Trump's tweets. In August, after a thorough review, Puerto Rican officials accepted a revised estimate of the dead as 2,975.
