A swimmer at a Cape Cod beach died Saturday in what experts believe is the first fatal shark attack in MA in more than 80 years. "15ft wide. I saw a tail and a lot of thrashing", Joe Booth said. He realised what was happening when the friend came ashore dragging his injured friend.

The beach was closed to swimmers but the type of shark involved in the attack is not yet known.

'It was like right out of that movie Jaws.

The two legislators thanked the Wellfleet Fire and Police departments, the town's beach staff and bystanders "whose preparation and quick action provided help as soon as possible".

The attack is being investigated by State Police and the Cape and Islands District Attorney's office.

"It is my personal belief that the responsibility for this terrible shark attack rests squarely upon the shoulders of the aforementioned officials for their utter lack of attention and inaction regarding the growing shark problem on Cape Cod of the last few years", he said.

The man, who has not been named, was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where he was later pronounced dead, though the extent of his injuries are not known.

Just last month, a 61-year-old man suffered puncture wounds following another Cape Cod shark attack.

The chief ranger at the Cape Cod National Seashore, Leslie Reynolds, told the Cape Cod Times that rangers and Wellfleet police performed CPR on the victim on the beach after the bite.
