Russian President Vladimir Putin is inspecting a week-long military exercise in eastern Siberia that involves around 300,000 troops and is being billed as Russia's biggest-ever.

More than 300,000 soldiers from Russian Federation and China are taking part in the land, air and sea exercises this week, in a show of strength and friendship between Moscow and Beijing.

Putin said the war games demonstrate the Russian army is capable of countering military threats, without naming the aggressors.

Moscow and Beijing have vowed to stage regular joint war games similar to the massive ones being held this week, Russia's defence minister said.

Putin further stressed that he highly assessed the performance of the Russian army and navy in the Vostok-2018 drills.

About 9,700 National Guard troops and civilians have been deployed, with high-water vehicles, helicopters and boats. A tropical storm warning is in effect for north of Duck, NC, to the North Carolina/Virginia border.

Vostok-2018, involving almost 300,000 servicemen, 36,000 vehicles and over a thousand aircraft, is Russia's largest military exercise since the Zapad drills in 1981.
