Kavanaugh and Ford Have Testified. Here's What Happens Next

In a letter dated Thurday and addressed to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, and ranking committee member Democrat Dianne Feinstein of California, bar association President Robert Carlson urged the Senate to delay a confirmation vote on Kavanaugh's nomination until after an "appropriate background check" into Ford's allegations is conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He was referring to Christine Blasey Ford, who told the Senate Judiciary Committee during a hearing Thursday that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when both were teenagers in the 1980s.

On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee scheduled its vote on Kavanaugh's nomination for Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. - less than 24 hours after Ford and Kavanaugh's testimony would conclude.

Democrats have demanded that a vote to confirm Kavanaugh be delayed pending a full FBI investigation into the accusation leveled against him by Ford.

Republicans hold a 51-49 advantage in the Senate and can't afford more than one defection to move the confirmation through without Democratic support.

Ms Feinstein criticised Republicans who have rejected Democratic demands to slow Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation process and let the FBI investigate all the allegations, saying: "What I don't understand is the rush to judgment".

She claims to have been traumatised by the event.

"His testimony was powerful, honest, and riveting". Blumenthal criticized Republicans on the other side of the room who "have been silent" during the hearing.

"Indelible in the hippocampus is the laughter", said Ford, who is a research psychologist, "the uproarious laughter between the two". Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), the committee's ranking Democrat, before the confirmation hearings began.

Through a spokeswoman, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Kavanaugh's nomination should not proceed without a full investigation of the allegations. Graham said. "And their goal, not Ms. Ford's goal, is to delay this past the midterms so they can win the Senate and never allow Trump to fill the seat". While he said it took courage for Ford to testify, there was no evidence to corroborate her allegations.

But the conservative jurist is facing allegations of sexual misconduct from other women as well, forcing Republican leaders to struggle to keep support for him from eroding.

"Dr. Ford's allegations are not merely uncorroborated, it's refuted by the very people she says were there".

Kavanaugh, who has two daughters, said one of his girls said they should "pray for the woman" making the allegations against him, referring to Ford. "That's a lot of wisdom from a 10-year-old", he said chocking up.

The case made by Democrats and outside groups goes beyond Judge.

"Sometimes I had too many beers", he acknowledged. U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona is a Republican but a constant and sharp critic of the President. "I liked beer. I still like beer. She will testify that Kavanaugh physically and sexually assaulted her when they both attended private schools in a tony suburb outside Washington".
