Pompeo plans to meet with Kim Jong Un again in Pyongyang

North Korea has called for an end-of-war declaration from the United States, but it has increasingly made clear it wants more than that in return for dismantling the Yongbyon nuclear compound - namely, the easing of sanctions.

Pompeo said earlier references to a date for the North to complete denuclearisation was a reference to talks between Kim Jong-un and South Korean president Moon Jae-in.

"Of course, we have quite a ways to go but we look forward to the next steps in this conversation".

Both Pompeo and Trump spoke about a second North Korean summit in positive terms last week in NY, while attending the United Nations General Assembly.

This will be Pompeo's fourth visit to North Korea since he became secretary of state.

"It will be the US and North Korea who will deal with denuclearization firsthand".

The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency said Tuesday that the end of the Korean War can never be a "bargaining chip" for denuclearization, which analysts interpret as a demand for sanctions relief.

Asked about sanctions, Nauert told reporters, "Our policy has not changed". He said there was unanimous support for this at last week's U.N. General Assembly, even if Russian Federation and China "had some ideas about how we might begin to think about a time when it would be appropriate to reduce them".

The US has not publicly announced its position on an end-of-war declaration, hesitant to do so in the absence of substantial progress on denuclearization.

He is expected to discuss a planned second summit between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump following the previous one in Singapore, June 12.

Nauert said the meetings in Japan, South Korea and China were meant to brief counterparts on the talks in Pyongyang. "I think if our leaders have relatively friendly relations, that that's a good thing", she said.

North Korea has complained on a weekly basis about the continued USA and worldwide sanctions placed on the country, and on Thursday said the measures were a "source of mistrust".

Pompeo's travel plans were revived after he met with his North Korean counterpart, Ri, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last week.

Washington and Pyongyang have made little progress in their nuclear talks since the first Trump-Kim summit, which drew a backlash for being short on specifics, especially on steps toward denuclearization. He left Pyongyang hailing progress, but North Korea blast him for making "gangster-like demands".

Pompeo stressed that in the meantime global sanctions would have to remain in place on North Korea.

Trump has nevertheless appeared keen on a second summit with Kim, even though recent North Korean statements have suggested the two sides are far from narrowing their differences.
