Pence Accuses China Of Undermining Trump Campaign

Vice President Mike Pence is accusing China of trying to undermine President Donald Trump as the administration deploys tough new rhetoric over Chinese trade, economic and foreign policies.

Pence made clear that the United States still adhered to its four-decade policy of recognizing only Beijing but added to applause: "Let me also say that Taiwan's embrace of democracy shows a better path for all the Chinese people". "As a senior career member of our intelligence community recently told me, what the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what China is doing across this country".

Pence's speech is the latest sign of deteriorating ties between the US and China, as the two nuclear powers tussle over everything from trade to Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian defended the naval maneuver on Tuesday, accusing the USA of threatening China's sovereignty and safety by repeatedly sending warships to disputed areas of the South China Sea.

"To put it bluntly, President Trump's leadership is working; China wants a different American president", Pence said at the Hudson Institute, a conservative Washington think tank.

Toyota recall: millions of potentially faulty hybrid vehicles
Toyota doesn't sell the Auris in the USA , which is why the Stateside component of this recall only covers the Prius and Prius V. While these cars were created to enter this mode in response to certain hybrid system faults, this may not operate as intended.

The unusually expansive and aggressive criticism of Beijing by a senior U.S. official indicated that Washington could be preparing to take a more confrontational approach with China on issues beyond just the trade dispute.

Mr Pence also said China had deployed anti-ship and anti-air missiles on islands it is building in the disputed South China Sea, despite promises not to militarise them.

Pence spoke days after Trump himself accused China of attempting to meddle in the 2018 midterm elections. As proof, Trump later referenced a paid advertising insert in The Des Moines Register by Chinese government-affiliated entities.

The report, which resulted from a Trump directive in July 2017 to assess the health of industries whose products and services are important to national defense, also accused China of "systematic theft" of USA weapons systems and the illicit transfer of dual-use technology that has upset the military balance between the US and China.

In his prepared remarks, Pence quotes an assessment from the US intelligence community that "China is targeting USA, state and local governments and officials to exploit any divisions between federal and local levels on policy. We will not stand down", the text said. "The Chinese side is firmly opposed to it", she said.

In August, more than a dozen human rights groups sent a joint letter to Google and urged the company not to offer censored internet search in China. "For example, Google should immediately end development of the "Dragonfly" app that will strengthen Communist Party censorship and compromise the privacy of Chinese customers".

"Usually dairy is a pawn and agriculture as a whole, we don't make out well in these deals because we're used as a bargaining chip and we're given away", said McCormick, who is also a western New York board representative for the New York Farm Bureau.

Pence was also to use the phrase "debt diplomacy" in reference to China's efforts to expand its influence worldwide.

He accused China of "reckless harassment" because of an incident on Sunday in which a Chinese naval vessel almost collided with a U.S. destroyer, the Decatur, near the Spratly islands. The democratically governed island, which China considers part of its own territory, has seen Beijing lure away several of its diplomatic partners in recent months.
