More than 55,000 hybrid cars have been recalled by Toyota in the United Kingdom due to possible stalling problems.

Toyota doesn't sell the Auris in the USA, which is why the Stateside component of this recall only covers the Prius and Prius V.

In the US, the recall covers more than 800,000 vehicles: the model year.

The recall of Prius and Auris cars includes 1.25 million in Japan, 830,000 in North America and 290,000 in Europe, of which about 55,000 are in the UK.

Borneo Motors, the authorised distributor for Toyota in Singapore, said in an email to Channel NewsAsia that 744 Toyota Prius cars in Singapore were affected by the latest recall.

"There have been no incidence of injury or accident in Australia because of the fault", a Toyota spokesperson told 9NEWS.

"Toyota has found that in rare situations, the vehicle may not enter a failsafe driving mode as intended".

While these cars were created to enter this mode in response to certain hybrid system faults, this may not operate as intended.

The Prius and Prius V vehicles may contain a software fault in their ECU.

In 2015, it had to recall 6.5 million vehicles globally over a faulty window switch that was liable to short-circuit. The company had received three reports in Japan related to the issue as of the end of September, but wasn't aware of any crashes in the country, Jault said.

A total of 744 Toyota Prius cars in Singapore have been recalled due to a fault that could result in a higher risk of the cars crashing.
