McConnell to AP: Gender gap hurts GOP but Kavanaugh helps

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh speaks during his ceremonial public swearing-in, in the East Room of the White House in Washington, U.S., October 8, 2018.

Kavanaugh promised to be an "impartial" judge and a "team player" during his ceremonial swearing-in at the White House late on Monday.

His ascent to the court was sealed by a 50-48 Senate vote last Saturday.

Kavanaugh emphasized he will be an "independent" and "impartial" justice on the nation's highest court.

He said: "Although the Senate confirmation process tested me as it has tested others, it did not change me".

Research shows unionists prefer Brexit over the territorial integrity of the UK

"I give special gratitude to senators Rob Portman, Susan Collins, Joe Manchin, John Kyl and Lindsey Graham".

"If I'm chairman, they won't take it [Supreme Court nomination] up", said Grassley. Had those charges been corroborated, Kavanaugh would certainly have been defeated and likely thrown off the D.C. Circuit Court at the very least.

"This is truly an historic week for America", Trump glowed, denouncing what he described as "the Democrats' shameful campaign of political and personal destruction" against Kavanaugh by drawing attention to multiple sexual misconduct accusations against him.

Before his defence of Justice Kavanaugh, Mr Trump said he would not be firing Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, over claims in the New York Times that he questioned the president's fitness for office.

"We'll see if there's a vacancy in 2020", McConnell said.

After the allegations against Kavanaugh were scrutinized, principled Americans saw that it was wrong to presume Kavanaugh guilty without evidence and permit the Democrats to assassinate his character. On the Supreme Court, I will seek to be a force for stability and unity.

Trump has repeatedly said that putting conservatives on the court - Kavanaugh is his second appointment - was among the top goals of his presidency.

The two-vote margin of victory in the Senate made it the closest Supreme Court confirmation vote since 1881 - and by far the most contentious since Clarence Thomas in 1991.

The president - whose Republicans fear losing at least the lower chamber of Congress - predicted that Democrats would pay for their attempts to block the confirmation, especially during the lurid debate over decades-old sexual assault allegations. Someone, possibly one of Feinstein's staffers, leaked Ford's letter to the press after the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearings with Kavanaugh. Murkowski voted against advancing Kavanaugh's nomination and "present" on the final vote.

Justice Kavanaugh's nomination had appeared safe until Christine Blasey Ford, a university professor in California, last month went public with allegations that the judge had sexually assaulted her in 1982 when they were high school students in Maryland. He has already hired four women to serve as his Supreme Court clerks, something that he noted Monday evening was a first, and has studied the legal briefs for the cases on deck.
