Up to 9in (23cm) of rainfall fell on the island in a matter of hours on Tuesday evening.

Footage broadcast of the floods showed cars being swept away by the rampaging flood waters and many people remain trapped in their homes following the heavy rain which hit the region.

Antonia Bauza, deputy mayor of Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, the worst-hit town, confirmed that two of the victims were British citizens.

A spokesman for the Spanish central government's office in the Balearic Islands told AFP nine people had died while six others had been formally identified as missing.

Sant Llorenc, which is about 60 kilometers (40 miles) east of Mallorca's capital, Palma, is where a dry creek overflowed amid heavy downpours, creating a strong current of water and mud that buried cars and tore trees along the way, according to witness accounts.

He said: "My solidarity and support goes out to the families and friends of victims and all the affected by these tragic floods".
