By 11 a.m. Monday, Michael's top sustained winds were around 75 miles per hour. By declaring this state of emergency, Gov. Its maximum sustained winds were measured at 70 miles per hour. A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of 96 to 110 miles per hour.

Florida has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of Tropical Storm Michael which is due to hit the U.S. coast next week. The exact path and timing of Michael's arrival and impacts will depend on forward motion of the storm.

A hurricane watch is in effect along the Alabama-Florida border down to the Suwanee River. Michael could reach or be close to a Category 3 by Tuesday night or Wednesday.

Panama City is about 375 miles away from Tampa.

"I'm asking all Floridians to stay vigilant throughout tonight and tomorrow as we brace for Hurricane Michael to make landfall". The governor's declaration activates the state's emergency operations plan, according to Ivey's office.

A hurricane warning and tropical storm watch are in place ahead of Michael's arrival. Swells generated by Michael will affect the south coast of Cuba and the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
