Ten suspected cases of rare nervous system disease in northern IL children

A 10th child in IL has now been diagnosed with the poliolike condition known as acute flaccid myelitis, which causes paralysis and difficulty swallowing, according to state health officials.

The infection is similar to viruses like polio and West Nile that affect the nervous system - especially the spinal cord - causing muscles and reflexes to become weak.

The Washington Department of Heath says all the children are 6 or younger.

The CDC began tracking the cases in 2014 after seeing an uptick in the number of cases. All the recent cases in Minnesota were in children under the age of 10. AFM has been compared to polio because the condition can lead to paralysis. "Since 2015, four cases reviewed by CDC experts have been counted in IL", the IDHP stated.

CDC officials said that they have not confirmed a cause for the majority of AFM cases and continue to investigate.
