Ohio State drops from No. 2 to No

The warning signs have been flashing for a while.

The Ohio State Buckeyes had few answers on the field during Saturday's 49-20 humiliation at Purdue.

For most of the season, the No. 2 Buckeyes have relied on the passing game to overcome their many flaws. Bailey is a Columbus, Ohio, native, but Ohio State didn't offer him a scholarship. His two touchdown passes were on plays where he targeted a player deep over top of the defense, or when he was able to get a speedy receiver into space.

Anthony Nelson added a TD on a fumble recovery for the Hawkeyes (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten), whose defense held the Terrapins to just 115 yards and seven first downs on a day when wind gusts topped 40 miles per hour. They are beaten up physically and their psyche will be questioned after losing for the first time.

Purdue (4-3, 3-1) announced its intention to compete early in the game with a couple of defensive stops.

Head coach Jeff Brohm wasn't having it. Recent history at Ross-Ade hasn't been kind to the Buckeyes, either. Northwestern, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Purdue all have just one conference loss, although Purdue's only loss to this point has come against Northwestern.

Adrian Martinez hit Stanley Morgan Jr. for a 35-yard TD and passed to him again for a 2-point conversion to make it 36-22.

Haskins wound up 49 of 73, shattering the single-game school records in both categories, and had 470 yards and two touchdowns and one interception.

Twice, Purdue cornerback Antonio Blackmon broke up third-down passes in the end zone. He converted a fourth-and-2 from the Michigan State 41 early in the fourth, setting up Ben Mason's 5-yard run that gave the Wolverines a 21-7 lead.

One of the nation's top offenses has no running game to speak of and has become too one-dimensional.

The Buckeyes were called for 10 penalties and faced their largest halftime deficit of the season, 14-3, before giving up four scoring plays of more than 40 yards in the fourth quarter. Blough threw for 378 yards on 25-of-43 passing.

Now Ohio State must fight its way back into the CFP mix.

Right at the end of the first half, Purdue was set up for a 30-yard field goal that would have given them a seven-point lead over Ohio State. But Davon Hamilton got a roughing penalty, and Purdue capitalized for a touchdown.

"It was fantastic", running back D.J. Knox said of the scene. The SEC West matchup between Mississippi State and LSU (7-10:15 p.m., ESPN) rated a 1.7 overnight, a 70% increase from LSU-Ole Miss from a year ago. Knox also had a big night for the Boilermakers by rushing for 128 yards and three touchdowns on 16 rushing attempts.

The game was expected to be a shootout between two explosive offenses against two shaky defenses. The Boilermakers converted a second-and-25, and Blough then threw to Isaac Zico for a 13-yard touchdown. The Boilermakers dominated the first half by playing keep away. West Virginia 14. Washington State 15.

The Boilermakers (4-3, 3-1 Big Ten) won their fourth straight overall, their second in a row over a ranked team and pulled off their biggest upset since taking down then-No.

He sent his field-goal unit out onto the field, but instead of going for three he called for a fake that worked to perfection.
