The New Jersey Department of Health said Tuesday that the outbreak of adenovirus was affecting pediatric patients at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, N.J.

Adenoviruses can cause a wide range of illnesses such as common cold, sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia, diarrhea, pink eye, fever, bladder inflammation or infection, stomach and intestine inflammation, and neurologic disease, according to the CDC.

The facility notified the state's health department of respiratory illnesses October 9.

Adenovirus is spread from one infected person to another through close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands; coughing or sneezing; or touching a contaminated object or surface, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands.

Six pediatric patients are dead and 12 others are sick due to a "severe" viral outbreak at a facility in New Jersey, the state Department of Health said in a statement Tuesday.

The health facility in Haskell is privately owned. While they typically cause mild illnesses, people with weakened immune systems or existing respiratory or cardiac disease are at higher risk of developing a severe illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, type 7 is most commonly associated with acute respiratory disease.

A team from the health department is at the facility and an inspection team was there Sunday, as well.
