Stephen Hawking Wheelchair, Thesis up for Sale

Christie's auction house is selling a variety of items owned by the late physicist Stephen Hawking, including one of his motorized wheelchairs. More of Hawking's papers - including "Fundamental Breakdown of Physics in Gravitational Collapse" and "Spectrum of Wormholes" - will be sold as well.

The auction includes one of five existing copies of Hawking's 1965 Cambridge University Ph.D. thesis, Properties of Expanding Universes, which carries an estimated price of 100,000 pounds to 150,000 pounds.

Christie's warns the wheelchair is "sold as a collector's item and not as an item for medical use". The wheelchair, estimated to be worth between $13,000 and $19,500, is included in the sale.

The auction house said the thesis is signed in Prof Hawking's distinctively shaky handwriting, with the statement: "This dissertation is my original work".

European Union rejects Italy's budget, raising stakes in dispute
But it says there are concerns about the budget's impact on Italy's people. "One should not get into a panic", he said. Italy immediately replied that it would stick to its plans and that the EU Commission had no right to meddle.

The sale also features "a remarkable" collection of souvenirs from the late Professor Hawking-including the original typescript of his thesis, a selection medals and awards, and a signed copy of A Brief History of Time.

Hawking suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, which is usually fatal within a few years.

Lucy Hawking, the late physicist's daughter, told the AP that the auction will give "admirers of [Hawking's] work the chance to acquire a memento of our father's extraordinary life in the shape of a small selection of evocative and fascinating items".

He was diagnosed with motor neuron disease at 21 in 1963, and was given two years to live. So, for much of his life, Hawking used a wheelchair to move and a speech-generating device to talk.

The chair on sale was used by Stephen Hawking from the end of the 1980s until the early years of the 1990s, before he became unable to use his hands to drive a wheelchair.

The items part of a science sale that includes papers by Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein will be on display in London for several days from October 30.

"...[G] iven his extensive travels to conferences and public events, as well as the scope of his intellectual explorations of space-time, this is arguably both literally and metaphorically the most-travelled wheelchair in history", notes the auction house, humorously observing that Hawking "was even renowned for being a rather wild driver". Stephen Hawking DiesHawking passed away on March 14 in his home in Cambridge, England.

In addition to publishing numerous scientific papers, Hawking wrote books, and his popular "A Brief History of Time" will be at the auction.
