Hawaii News Now reported aerial photographs taken after the storm show sections of East Island have resurfaced. The area of the island reached 4.5 hectares.

Federal and state managers of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument announced they won't know the extent of the damage until they can get out there.

Hurricane Walaka, which struck East Island earlier this month, has been recorded as the second-strongest tropical cyclone to wreak havoc on the central Pacific.

As it became known, a powerful storm hit on a Hawaiian island and literally washed it in the open ocean.

In its wake, however, it seems to have caused an island to disappear.

According to researchers, the disappearance of the whole island does not go unnoticed - coming serious consequences. This information was confirmed and environmentalists, providing the first images of the new terrain.

There are just 1,400 Hawaiian monk seals left in the wild, and East Island was where many of them raised their young. He said that he felt that there would be just one more shrink for this planet to end.

"The island was probably one to two thousand years old and we were only there in July, so for it to be lost right now is pretty bad luck", Fletcher told the Guardian.

On Facebook, Fletcher called the event a "silent tragedy" for the French Frigate Shoals and the marine life that nested there.

The vanishing of more islands in the near future is possible - though scientists can not say climate change causes hurricanes, scientific evidence shows that storms are stronger and wetter because of climate change.

Randy Kosaki, a deputy superintendent of research and field operations at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Washington Post that researchers have expected low-lying islands like East Island to vanish under rising sea levels.
