UK Energy Minister Had 'Private' Meeting With Drillers Before Fracking Resumed

Anti-fracking campaigners had tried to stop the process with an injunction bid but failed.

Cuadrilla Resources has reported a second seismic incident this week at its site in northern England, where the United Kingdom shale gas explorer recently started hydraulic fracturing operations.

Energy firm Cuadrilla started drilling for shale gas last week, but the company called their second halt to proceedings in a week due to the "micro seismic event".

The natural disaster is the 14th recorded by the British Geological Survey and the joint biggest since fracking began last Monday. However, today, at 10.55am another 0.8 tremor was recorded by seismic experts.

Ibrahimi said 111 candidates were vying for 11 seats in Parliament from southern Kandahar in Afghanistan's 249-seat chamber. Despite delays caused by technical and organisational glitches, voters waited patiently to cast their vote .

Cuadrilla said it halted drilling for 18 hours after a tremor was detected at its site in Little Plumpton, northwest England.

A spokesman said: "Cuadrilla can confirm, following hydraulic fracking this morning, a micro seismic event of 0.8, which can't be felt at surface, was recorded through the detailed seismic monitoring Cuadrilla and the British Geological Survey are carrying out".

"Operations have now paused for the next 18 hours during which seismicity levels will continue to be measured".

Earlier this week, more than 300,000 people have signed a petition opposing the government's proposal to accelerate new fracking developments.

Angela Merkel won't seek re-election as party leader, sources say
But only the Greens, who are in opposition nationally, are benefiting in polls. Ms Merkel has been the CDU's chairwoman since 2000 and chancellor since 2005.

Cuadrilla was hydraulically fracturing the shale rock adjacent to a well when the seismic activity was recorded, the spokesman said. It was too small to be felt above ground and was not categorised as a "red" event by the Oil and Gas Authority, unlike the one on Friday, because it occurred after operations had finished at 1pm. I think there is a potential chance we could reach a category 3, and if that happens we will definitely feel it on the surface.

'All the relevant regulators were informed without delay and we have verified that the well integrity is intact'. "As per the hydraulic fracture plan in place at Preston New Road, work will now pause for at least 18 hours and is expected to recommence in the morning (Saturday, October 27, 2018)".

Fracking was banned in 2011 after Cuadrilla caused two earthquakes of up to 2.3 magnitude at another site in Lancashire. Cuadrilla is planning to frack two wells at its Lancashire site, and then it aims to test to see if the gas flow is commercially viable.
