Brazil Elects Self-Styled Right Wing Strongman Jair Bolsonaro

Right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro won Brazil's presidential run-off on Sunday. Bolsonaro has publicly mocked women and their appearance - once telling a female lawmaker that, "I wouldn't rape you because you don't deserve it" - mocked minority groups, threatened to jail his political opponents and warned that immigrants are eroding Brazilian culture. "To increase deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions is to leave each and everyone of us more vulnerable to an increasing risk of climate extremes".

Some voters chose Bolsonaro because he, unlike so many other politicians, has no apparent involvement in the country's extensive corruption scandal. His ascendance to power is leading many to fear the future of democracy in Brazil is in danger.

The Amazon itself is retreating to the tune of 52,000 square kilometers - equivalent to the area of Costa Rica - each year, as agriculture giants saw down trees to make way for vast tracts on which to graze cattle or grow plants for food and cosmetic products.

Bolsonaro's top economic adviser, free-market guru Paulo Guedes, also confirmed a decision to create an economy "super-ministry" combining finance, planning, industry and trade.

Trump Spoke With China's Xi on Trade, Says Talks Going 'Nicely'
Xi was quoted by CCTV as saying after the call with Trump that the two leaders had hoped to expand bilateral trade cooperation. Neither leader specified any details of potential progress in their first known direct discussion in several months.

Brazil is already the deadliest country in the world in which to defend your land, with at least 57 people murdered previous year, 25 of them in three massacres.

Onyx Lorenzoni, a fellow congressman whom Bolsonaro has tapped as chief of staff, told journalists that Guedes would be responsible for structuring the government's relationship with an independent, autonomous central bank with targets.

The former paratrooper is a deeply polarising figure who has in the past defended the actions of the country's former military regime and said he is "in favour of dictatorship".

He also floated Moro as a possibility for one of two Supreme Court positions set to be vacated during his term.

Streisand also opened up about the time she spoke to Apple's Tim Cook about getting the pronunciation of her name changed on Siri. The British comedian had some amusing moments with the 76-year-old singing legend as she admitted that she's not the best driver.

Federal judge Moro has been in charge of a major investigation into claims that executives at the state oil company Petrobras accepted bribes in return for awarding contracts to construction firms.

In a statement, Moro said he would be "honored" by such an invitation, and added that it "would be the object of careful discussion and reflection". Under the two previous left wing Presidents Dilma Roussef and Luiz Inacio "Lula" da Silva were both staunch advocates of recognizing a Palestinian state. Lula, the former president, remains in prison on a 12-year sentence for corruption and money laundering.

The president-elect's future chief of staff told Reuters his first global trip would be to Chile - one of the South American neighbors that swung to the right in recent elections - and soon after that he hoped to visit the United States.
