Smartphone sales down for fourth straight quarter

The latest figures on global smartphone shipments have been released. Smartphone makers shipped just 355.2 million last quarter, according to numbers from IDC. IDC said this was the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year declines for the global smartphone market.

To be precise, Samsung has shipped 72.3 million smartphones globally in Q3 of 2018, which is a drop from the smartphones sold a year ago for the same quarter, i.e., 83.4 million units.

"Many markets have already hit a saturation point for new smartphone demand and are dependent on replacement demand, buying a more expensive device results in extending the length of replacement cycles, especially when your earnings are limited". Samsung remained the top smartphone vendor with 72 million shipments, a 13% drop from last year's Q3, while Huawei overtook Apple to claim second with 52 million shipped phones.

Matter of fact, the global market in smartphones plummeted 6% last quarter alone, reports Engadget.
