"The conversation came up, 'Should I eat it?'".

Sam Ballard, 29, was left with a brain injury after contracting rat lungworm disease, also known as eosinophilic meningo-encephalitis, when he ate a common garden slug during a party with friends in 2010.

The emotional final moments of a young rugby player who died eight years after swallowing a slug and becoming a paraplegic have been revealed.

But the slug was the culprit, and had led Sam to contract rat lungworm, or angiostrongyliasis - a parasite carried by rats that affects the brain and spinal cord.

Ballard's death was announced on the Australian news show "The Sunday Project" by broadcaster Lisa Wilkinson.

"We have some sad news for you now".

Throughout the many struggles with his health, Sam's friends were still by his side and frequently visited him over the years.

On Friday Ballard - dubbed "cheeky larrikin" - died surrounded by loved ones.

He lost his fight for life on Friday and his last words to his mother were "I love you".

Wilkinson penned her own tribute after meeting Sam earlier in the year.

"I try and make it matey and fun - we will crack a beer, when Katie goes out of the room, he reaches for it, he gets his lips out and sometimes we put a little bit of beer on his lips". He could not eat for himself and he needed help going to the bathroom. Ballard "just started bawling his eyes out".

"So you know he's there", Mr Galvin said. "It was a big shock".

"It made his day", his mates said.

'May Sam's star always shine bright, just the way it did in life, ' a mourner wrote.

In a Facebook post from 2011, Ms Ballard said she hoped her son would walk again.

"Told him it was the stress of the last 16 months that had affected my eyesight".

However, she added, Sam's illness hit the family hard. It's huge. The impact is huge, ' she said.

Katie spent years fighting for adequate care for Sam after 2010.

Katie applied to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in 2016 and Sam was granted a AUD $492,000 package.

But in October, 2017, that was reviewed and slashed by more than half. As a result of media coverage, the decision was later reversed, according to the Grafton Daily Examiner.
