Judge Orders Pipe Bomb Suspect Cesar Sayoc Held Without Bail

Accused mail bomber Cesar Sayoc will remain behind bars following a brief first appearance in Manhattan court Tuesday.

He faces five federal charges: interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and other persons, threatening interstate communications, and assaulting current and former federal officers.

Assistant prosecutors to Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman confirmed another explosive device Sayoc allegedly mailed to California-based billionaire hedge fund manager Thomas Steyer was discovered Friday, USA Today reported.

Prosecutors told a judge that Sayoc presents a flight risk and is a serious danger to the public.

His lawyers did not attempt to seek his release on bail after prosecutors released a letter outlining more evidence against him, including DNA linking him to 10 of the explosive devices and fingerprints on two of them.

She wrote that she was shocked to see Cesar Sayoc, her son, arrested and charged last week with mailing the devices to former President Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and other high-profile Democrats.

During the hearing on Tuesday, Sayoc responded "Yes, sir" to questions from the judge and hugged his lawyer after the hearing. Several of the devices were intercepted in NY.

Cesar Sayoc was transferred from Miami overnight.

None of the devices exploded before being intercepted and no one was hurt.

The week-long series of events where explosive devices began turning up in the post heightened tensions before the crucial midterm elections, which were happening across the U.S. on the same day as Sayoc's court appearance amid tight security.

The 56-year-old was recently extradited to NY from Florida, where he was arrested October 26 at an auto parts store.

Sayoc is due to return to a federal court on Monday for a preliminary hearing.
