U.S. exempts three Iranian nuclear sites from sanctions

The United States has exempted India from imposition of certain sanctions for the development of the strategically-located Chabahar Port in Iran, along with the construction of the railway line connecting it with Afghanistan, a State Department spokesperson said.

"The US will be granting these exemptions to China, India, Italy, Greece, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey".

India has invested $500 million (approximately Rs 3,600 crore at current exchange rate) in the Chabahar project, which will connect the country with Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan.

Iran late previous year inaugurated the port on the Indian Ocean which provides a key supply route to landlocked Afghanistan and allows India to bypass its arch-rival Pakistan. US Secretary of State Michael R Pompeo had said these countries have shown significant reduction in oil purchase from Iran.

Early on Monday the USA imposed its "toughest ever" sanctions on Iran that it had earlier lifted after the signing of the nuclear agreement in July, 2015 between Tehran and Russia, China, the UK, France, Germany and the US. In addition, having initially talked of cutting Iranian oil shipments to zero, Washington gave waivers to eight customers, raising the prospect of more Iranian oil in the market than expected.

The US announced on Tuesday it has provided for an "exception" from certain sanctions - an exemption, in other words - to the Iranian port of Chabahar that India has developed and used for reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. "These activities are vital for the ongoing support of Afghanistan's growth and humanitarian relief".
