Boeing jet crash lands in Guyana

All Canadian passengers aboard a Toronto-bound flight with a mechanical problem escaped injury when their plane skidded off the runway at Guyana's main global airport, federal officials said Friday.

It said Flight OJ256 "suffered an accident on landing", but had no other details on the nature of the accident.

The aircraft, a Boeing 757-200 according Flightradar 24, was bound for Canada when it suffered a hydraulic issue after take-off, AFP reported, citing Guyana's infrastructure minister, David Patterson.

About 20 minutes into the flight, the pilot indicated the plane was experiencing problems with its hydraulic system, Guyana officials said at a Friday morning news conference.

Images posted on the airport's Facebook page and various sites showed the plane appearing to have gone through a chain link fence, with one of its engines tilted upward and resting on the fencing. The airport has also set up a hotline for family members looking for assistance and information. Ali, a resident of Toronto, flew to Georgetown two weeks ago for her brother's funeral.

The Cheddi Jagan International Airport has since been reopened to regular traffic. Roopnarine said she was told the plane was filled with smoke and passengers were trying to force their way off.

"Where the aircraft veered off is about the exact same place the Caribbean Airlines (plane did)... so fortunately for us on this occasion, the extension (of the runway) was there so they were able to utilise the extension", Patterson said, adding that investigations into the matter had already started.

"She just wants to come home", Roopnarine said. The US National Transportation Safety Board was alerted.
