City of Malibu under mandatory evacuation as wildfire rages

An emergency evacuation order was issued for several neighborhoods west of Los Angeles as firefighters frantically fought back the Woolsey Fire.

The fire broke out Thursday northwest of Los Angeles and roared southward, jumping the USA 101 freeway early Friday and sweeping into the Santa Monica Mountains.

The Woolsey Fire was zero percent contained as of 4 a.m. Friday after scorching 8,000 acres and destroying at least 30 homes in the two counties, fire officials said.

Massive wildfires are tearing through parts of California, destroying hundreds buildings and forcing thousands of people from their homes.

While there have been injuries from the fire, there's no official tally of how many civilians and firefighters were hurt or possibly killed. "There's nothing much left standing", said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) spokesman Scott Maclean.

Ventura County Fire Department tweeted that intense winds fueled the fire overnight, leading it to jump 101.

About 1:30 a.m., all residents south of the Ventura Freeway between Westlake Boulevard on the west, Mulholland Highway to the south and Las Virgenes Road to the east were told to leave the area immediately, according to Malibu Search and Rescue.

The swift-moving Camp Fire, raging about 80 miles north of Sacramento, consumed Paradise, and moved Friday morning into the eastern side of Chico, a city with a population of around 90,000.

While not as big as the Camp Fire, the Woolsey Fire, which now measures approximately 8,000 acres, is in a much more densely populated area. She and her husband eventually were able to drive away safely.

About two-thirds of the city of Malibu was ordered evacuated early Friday as a ferocious Southern California's wildfire roared toward the beachside community that is home for many Hollywood celebrities.
