But Mitt Romney, the party's 2012 presidential nominee who was elected on Tuesday to the U.S. Senate from Utah, warned that Mueller's probe should not be affected by Sessions' departure.

Sessions is departing as Mueller's Russian Federation investigation grinds on.

The timing for when a final report would be submitted by the special counsel's office is still unclear, and sources say there is also no clear timeline for when Mueller will wrap his investigation. Mr Whitaker expressed concerns over the investigation. And he's one step closer to being able to do just that.
