California gun victim survived Las Vegas attack

12 people were tragically killed when a gunman opened fire in a crowded bar in Thousand Oaks, California. Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and a highway patrol officer rushed into the bar and exchanged gunfire with the shooter, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

The mother of one of the Las Vegas shooting survivors who tragically died in the Thousand Oaks shooting is speaking out.

For some it was not a new experience.

Telemachus Orfanos, 27, a Navy veteran, survived the October 2017 mass shooting at a country music concert in Las Vegas that killed 58 people.

Typically after incidents like this week's shooting, regular Americans, politicians, and celebrities offer their "thoughts and prayers" to the victims, which has turned the phrase into a meme about inaction on gun control.

"Hits very close to home, and to Adam and the rest of his family, I know they're grieving a lot now", Hemmer said. He made it through Las Vegas, he came home.

Dean said the sheriff's department trains its deputies to enter buildings where there's an active shooter, a policy that changed after the Columbine school shooting in 1999. Eleven people inside were found shot dead, and others wounded. Others used chairs to break windows to escape. He heard another volley of shots once he was safely outside.

Dominique Colell, who coached girls' track and field at the high school where Long was a sprinter, remembers an angry young man who could be verbally and physically combative. Only 10 days ago, a gunman killed 11 worshippers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

President Donald Trump praised police for their "great bravery" in the attack and ordered flags flown at half-mast in honour of the victims.

Court records show that Long was arrested for speeding in Ventura County in 2013.

The shooting appeared to be random and didn't target specific people, Dean said.
