This meeting may prove to be a good opportunity for China, if not the last.

Kudlow said "it's pretty clear now" that Trump will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 industrialised nations meeting in Argentina later this month.

While two industry sources familiar with the contents of the response told Reuters it was largely a restatement of previous Chinese commitments, it was seen as a necessary starting point for continued negotiations. The two sides have been far apart during their months-long tariff dispute.

One of the sources briefed on China's response said it reiterated pledges Xi had made in recent speeches, and demanded that the United States lift tariffs, including those placed on steel and aluminium imports.

"The president's attitude is, we want to make sure they know where we stand, what we are prepared to do, so they can come to Argentina with concrete proposals that address not just the trade deficit that we face ..."

Sir Elton John takes centre stage in John Lewis Christmas advert
A rep for Elton said: "The speculation in recent months around Elton's fee for appearing in the ad has been wildly inaccurate". Earlier this year, reports speculated that John Lewis had paid Elton John £5m to feature in the Christmas ad.

Washington, Europe and other trading partners say those plans violate Beijing's market-opening obligations, but Chinese leaders see them as a route to prosperity and global influence.

Trade will be one of the issues up for discussion when the delegation arrives, a Treasury spokesperson revealed.

"The United States is not pursuing a Cold War or containment policy with China".

United States stocks struggled to hold early gains on Tuesday after oil prices slumped, just as hopes were rising for progress in the American-China trade dispute.

"Teams from both sides are maintaining close contact to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state", Gao said.

Reports of looming Rohingya return to Myanmar have Canadian ministers ‘deeply concerned’
The U.N. has said it should be investigated as a genocide, but the USA has stopped short of that and called it ethnic cleansing. For Maung Soe, a Rohingya inside northern Rakhine State, for whom fleeing was not a viable option, conditions remain dire.

The tariff rate on $200 billion in Chinese goods is set to increase to 25 percent from 10 percent on January 1. Trump has also said that if the two can't reach a deal, Washington would impose tariffs on all remaining Chinese imports, about $267 billion worth. Some American officials also worry Chinese development plans could erode USA industrial leadership.

"The most probable scenario will see that China and the US reach some kind of preliminary framework of agreement, where the two sides can drop tariff measures and start to work things out in a more regular, productive way", GRisk's Feng said.

The United States Vice President Mike Pence has warned Beijing to change its behavior in order to avoid a cold war with the US.

In this context, Pence singled out "rampant intellectual property theft, forced technology transfer, restricted access to Chinese markets, respect for global rules and norms, efforts to limit freedom of navigation in worldwide waters and Chinese Communist Party interference in the politics of Western countries". At a briefing in Beijing Thursday, a spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce didn't respond to journalists' questions on whether China had sent a list of concessions.

Washington should "respect China's sovereignty, security and development interest, as well as the path of development chosen by the Chinese people", said the spokeswoman, Hua Chunying.
