The animal rights group then provided followers with alternative variations of common phrases "to remove speciesism from your daily conversation".

Don't mind our animal-friendly language but PETA suddenly tweeted yesterday (Dec 4) a list of English phrases that they consider to be discriminatory towards animals.

In a tweet Tuesday, PETA posted a list of common idioms such as "Kill two birds with one stone" and "beat a dead horse", with phrases they deem more acceptable, like "feed two birds with one scone" and "feed a fed horse". In place of taking "the bull by the horns", how about taking "the flower by the thorns?" The tweet, which has been shared nearly 10,000 times in 24 hours, includes the caption, "Words matter, and as our understanding of social justice evolves, our language evolves along with it".

The internet laughed, and objected.

PETA has been heavily criticised for comparing "speciesism" to racism, homophobia and ableism. Thousands of people replied to PETA's tweets, complaining about the comparison.
