A stampede at a nightclub near the Italian city of Ancona early on Saturday killed six people and injured a further 120, media and firefighters said.

Poggiali also said he didn't have any immediately confirmation about use of any irritating spray. At least 12 people who were injured in the incident are said to be in serious condition.

Fire brigades said the stampede took place in the Lanterna Azzurra nightclub in the town of Corinaldo, near Ancona, on the Adriatic coast. It quoted one teenager as saying that the emergency exit was blocked. "The bouncers were getting the persons out", one unidentified witness told RAI state radio. The barrier then appeared to give way, and a cascade of teenagers tumbled over it, falling on top of each other.

A teenage survivor told Italian media: "We were dancing and waiting for the concert to start when we smelt this pungent odour". Some of those with minor injuries were treated and released from hospital, he added. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said there possibly was a "stink" that could have been ammonia or another substance.
