Huawei unveils next-gen server chipset to reduce reliance on imports

The new chip will power the TaiShan server of the company, which was also announced on Monday. One focuses on storage, the second on high density, and a third option attempts to balance the two.

At typical frequency, the Kunpeng 920 CPU scores over 930 in SPECint Benchmarks test and is 25 per cent higher than the industry benchmark.

Huawei, headquartered in the southern city of Shenzhen, has steadily expanded into new industry segments.

With the new server chipset, Huawei moves further towards becoming self-dependent for its chips and potentially reduces the impact of any trade disputes between China and the US which has already seen both countries implement tariffs on each other's tech imports. Single-slot speed is "twice that of the incumbent offering", Huawei said, improving the performance of storage and various accelerators. The Kunpeng 920 aims to boost performance in terms of big data workloads, distributed storage, and floating-point calculations.

AC Milan’s Higuain poised for Chelsea move
Chelsea, for their part, are in need of a striker after deploying Eden Hazard as a false nine for a large chunk of the season. And Leonardo says Higuain has to make up his mind about whether he wants to continue his career at San Siro or go elsewhere.

"We hope to make our cloud service, together with our partners, one of the top five cloud services in the world", he added.

Kunpeng 920, the industry's highest-performance ARM-based server CPU was independently designed by Huawei using the cutting-edge 7nm process.

"TaiShan will enable computing platforms with high performance and low power consumption for enterprises", the company said. "Huawei and Intel will continue our long-term strategic partnerships and continue to innovate together".

Huawei has since launched its TaiShan servers which are powered by the new chipset and are used for big data, distributed and ARM native applications.

Spider-Man on PS4 is getting something 'fantastic'
That tease was dropped in a Marvel.com livestream Thursday afternoon as part of the site's " Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Week" event.

William Xu, director, chief strategy marketing officer, chairman of the Investment Review Board of Huawei, speaks during an unveiling ceremony for a processor chip in Shenzhen, China, on January 7, 2019.

"Huawei has continuously innovated in the computing domain in order to create customer value. We will work with global partners in the spirit of openness, collaboration, and shared success to drive the development of the ARM ecosystem and expand the computing space, and embrace a diversified computing era". "We're working very closely with ARM to get the optimizations done on the gcc front, and the ARM compiler", which will increase performance as these optimizations produce more efficient binaries.

Hawei wants to "foster an open, collaborative, and win-win ecosystem" and is collaborating with the likes of Ubuntu, SUSE, Linaro, and other organizations. Xu tried to play down suggestions the Kunpeng 920 might compete directly with Intel, a major supplier to Huawei.

He would not agree to do the Oscars again, he said, because there was now not enough time left for him to prepare. I've said where the rights and wrongs were. 'If you keep feeding this energy, then it's going to grow, ' he said.
