Mike Pompeo: no contradictions in Washington’s Syria policy

Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, has blamed former president Barack Obama's "misjudged" foreign policy for the last decade of chaos in the Middle East, in a thumping speech delivered in Cairo. Pompeo met senior Iraqi leaders, including Prime Minister Adil Adb al-Mahdi and President Barham Salih, whom he reassured that the United States was committed to not only defeating ISIS in the region, but making sure the terror group can not rebuild itself after the fighting stops.

The tour follows the uproar over President Donald Trump's decision to pull U.S. troops out of Syria and is meant to reassure America's allies that the United States is still standing with them, especially in the fight against Iran.

Iraqi President Salih was asked by reporters on Wednesday as he met with Pompeo, who ignored a similar question, if he wanted USA troops to remain in his country. The top United States diplomat said that Erdogan has "made commitments" and has in fact "no beef with the Kurds".

In trying to make that case, the secretary said President Trump has been more forceful in dealing with Syrian President Bashar Assad, has taken a tougher stance against Iran's regime and has "empowered our commanders in the field to strike ISIS quicker and harder than ever before". Pompeo's first message to the Jordanian foreign minister was one he is expected to echo across the region: Washington is committed to isolating and restraining Iranian expansion.

"It's also very important that as we discuss with members of the coalition, [and] other countries that have an interest, like Israel and Turkey, that we expect that those who have fought with us in Syria. particularly the Kurds", not be put in "jeopardy" by the withdrawal, said Bolton, who plans to travel Tuesday to Ankara.

"This is about a combined understanding that the most significant threat to the region is Daesh and the Islamist revolution, and their revolutionary efforts in the region", he said.
