The ‘Sopranos’ Prequel Movie Will Feature a Young Tony Soprano

Alessandro Nivola attends HBO's "The Sopranos" 20th anniversary at the SVA Theatre on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, in NY.

David Chase announced a year ago that he'd begun work on a prequel film to his beloved HBO series The Sopranos.

Aside from this, he also confirmed that the heated social-political climate of the era and the 1967 Newark race riots will be massive factors in the story. Alessandro Nivola has been cast as Dickie Moltisanti, father of The Sopranos' Christopher.

Chase doesn't specify how big of a part Tony will play, but the casting on this will be interesting, considering how iconic James Gandolfini made the role.

Oscars fumble host test in wake of Kevin Hart's exit
When asked by Colbert if he knew who his replacement would be, Hart said he didn't know because he wasn't "on the email list". We thought it was okay to talk like that, because that's how we talked to one another. "In that, you go f-".

Here's what else Chase added (pulled from my own personal copy of The Sopranos Sessions): "If you were producing that [tunnel scene], you'd say, 'Well, obviously he's a gangster, and his death means the end of the show, so he should die".

Speaking about his motivation to return to the series after all this time, Chase told Deadline, "I was against [the movie] for a long time and I'm still very anxious about it, but I became interested in Newark, where my parents came from, and where the riots took place".

"I'm still very anxious about it, but I became interested in Newark, where my parents came from, and where the riots took place...", he shared. But Chase clarified that this won't be the same rose-colored Newark from Tony's memory.

The man behind one of TV's all-time great mysteries may have finally spilled the beans about the fate of mob boss Tony Soprano, offering an illuminating comment on the infamous fade-to-black finale of "The Sopranos".

Are you excited for more The Many Saints of Newark?

"Yeah, I feel they're out there with shotguns, just waiting."

"Yes, I think I had that death scene around two years before the end", says Chase, who has consistently refused to elaborate on theories that the ending symbolizes Tony's point of view going dark when he's assassinated in the restaurant.

Chase reteamed with fellow show writer Lawrence Konner to pen The Many Saints of Newark, which will be directed Alan Taylor, who previously took charge of a number of The Sopranos episodes.
