US Confirms Iran Holding American Navy Vet for Last 6 Months

The New York Times reported 46-year-old Michael R. White was detained in Iran while visiting his Iranian girlfriend in July.

Joanne White told the newspaper she does not know whether any charges have been filed against him or why he was detained. The State Department told her three weeks ago that he's now in an Iranian prison, the report said. She said the family only learned from the State Department in December, however, that he was being held in an Iranian prison.

A manager at an apartment complex in the 700 block of 11th Street in Imperial Beach told 10News Michael White and his wife lived in a unit for several years. Lupe White said he has had an online relationship with a woman in Iran for six years and would go see her for two weeks at a time.

The State Department advises Americans not to travel to Iran, "due to the risk of arbitrary arrest and detention of U.S. citizens".

At least five Americans have been sentenced to prison in Iran on espionage-related charges. American officials have demanded their release, saying the father and son did nothing wrong.

Bob Levinson, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, vanished on Iran's Kish Island in 2007 while on an intelligence mission. His family sued Iran over his disappearance in 2017.

The last time Iran released US citizens from its prisons was when the nuclear agreement took effect in January 2016.

A fifth American, Matthew Trevithick, was separately released that month, USA officials said.

Those releases came months after the global deal to restrict Iran's nuclear program - the same deal from which the United States withdrew past year.
