Ottawa bus crash: three dead as double decker hits transit shelter

During a press conference, Ottawa Police said the bus driver had been taken into custody.

A double decker bus ripped open when it struck a bus shelter in the Canadian capital on Friday, killing three people and injuring at least 23, officials said.

Part of the upper right side of the bus was shorn off in the collision, which happened shortly before 4 p.m. ET (2100 GMT) at a busy transit station in the west end of the city.

"The upper deck on the bus was compromised and several people were trapped on the upper level for a period of time", the news release said.

Gabriel Rivett-Carnac, an eyewitness who lives across the street from the station, told CTV News' Annie Bergeron-Oliver that "an unusual number of sirens" alerted him to the incident.

The driver was detained at the scene and he was set to be interviewed by police. "I saw one person being lowered from the top floor in a seated position". Bordeleau said the Ottawa Paramedic Service and Ottawa Fire Services worked the scene in partnership with the Ottawa Police.
