Maroon 5 announced as Super Bowl half-time performers

The NFL officially announced on Sunday (Monday NZ time) - finally - that Maroon 5, backed by Travis Scott and Big Boi, will perform during this year's Super Bowl halftime show in Atlanta, US.

Levine previously spoke only in hypothetical terms - joking that "whoever is lucky enough to get that gig probably is gonna crush it" - when Ellen DeGeneres asked him about the Super Bowl during an appearance on her show in November.

The Super Bowl tends to draw the biggest (and least controversial) names in pop, so enlisting Maroon 5, which has earned 14 top 10 hits on the Billboard 100 and sold more than 50 million albums, makes sense for the most-watched show of the year. Before settling on Maroon 5 as its headliner, the league reached out to several other artists, including Rihanna, Pink, Nicki Minaj, and André 3000, but were rebuffed by each of them, reportedly in solidarity of Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL QB who was seemingly blackballed from the league for protesting police brutality.

"I know being an artist that it's in my power to inspire".

Maroon Five and Big Boi marked the occasion by sharing his excitement via Twitter.
