Samsung to stop using plastic packaging for its products

The plastic packaging that's now used for Samsung's products and accessories will be replaced with sustainable elements such as recycled/bio-based plastics and paper from the first half of 2019. The plan to first limit and ultimately replace plastic packaging is part of the company's sustainability policy. Samsung is also changing the design of its USB phone chargers: the current glossy plastic finish will be switched for a matter finish instead.

Samsung Electronics has announced it is taking steps to reduce its environmental impact by switching from plastic packaging materials to paper and other environmentally-sustainable materials - including for its smartphones, tablets, and wearables. But given that an estimated 91 per cent of plastics aren't recycled, and certainly because Samsung is such a global behemoth, any effort to move away from plastic packaging is a welcome shift. These materials are made from plastic wastes and non-fossil fuel materials such as starch or sugar cane, respectively.
