Colder than Antarctica: Brutal deep freeze grips US Midwest

A brutal cold wave moved eastward on Thursday after bringing temperatures in the US Midwest lower than those in Antarctica, grounding flights, closing schools and businesses and raising fears of hypothermia.

It's winter in the United States, and swaths of the country are now experiencing bitter cold brought on by a phenomenon nicknamed the polar vortex, a pattern weather satellites are watching closely. It has resulted in unsafe wind chills making it feel close to -50 for areas of Saskatchewan and Manitoba on Wednesday and a large swath of extreme cold warnings for central and Eastern Canada. During the early Wednesday morning hours, much of the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and IL are locked down with these "feels like" temperatures in the -40s, -50s, and even -60s (Fahrenheit) as winds howl out of the west at up to 25mph.

Andrew Orrison, a meteorologist with the NWS, said some of the coldest wind chills were recorded in International Falls, Minnesota, at minus 55 F (minus 48 C).

The cold air will began to moderate substantially on Monday and Tuesday. Five city buses were also deployed to serve as mobile warming centres for homeless people, while city police handed out hats, jackets and blankets.

Mr Emanuel also added that the city is making sure homeless people are in shelters while the Governor of Illinois, JB Pritzkler declared a state of emergency earlier this week - which has also been called in MI and Wisconsin. In Chicago, major attractions closed because of the bitter cold, including the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Art Institute and the Field Museum.

Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel said: "These conditions are actually a public health risk and you need to treat it appropriately". These tubes are thin, and if there's any moisture in them when temperatures drop to extreme levels, they can freeze, causing blockages that prevent fuel from flowing.

Manchester United offer Juan Mata new one-year deal
Mata has made four appearances under Solskjaer so far, scoring the opening goal against Reading in the third round of the FA Cup. Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata , whose contract runs out in the summer.

A wind chill of -32C can freeze skin within 15 minutes, according to experts.

The wind chill will plunge to minus-30 to minus-40 as far south as IL and northern Indiana. Detroit's outlook was for overnight lows around -26C, with wind chills dropping to -40C.

The weather has been blamed for at least six deaths across the U.S. midwest.

A popular saying goes: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat ..." will stop the mail from being delivered.

Residents of the city of Chicago in IL, long used to freezing winters, have been warned to expect an unusually deep and unsafe period of cold.

The bitter cold was the result of a split in the polar vortex, a mass of cold air that normally stays bottled up in the Arctic. Wind chills in other areas of the Maritimes will make it feel into the minus teens and 20s at times Thursday through Sunday.

Facebook will tighten its rules on political ads, Nick Clegg promises
Each ad will also be entered into a publicly searchable archive with detailed information on who paid for it and the people it has reached.

"We're bringing the warming shelters to them, so they can stay near all of their stuff and still warm up", said Cristina Villarreal, spokeswoman for the city's Department of Family and Support Services.

Though the potentially record-shatteringly low temperatures descending on a large swath of the country may touch off a political debate over global warming, Chenard said, the phenomenon is not related to climate change.

Officials planned to cancel classes for all 360,000 students in Chicago on Wednesday because of the subzero temperatures. Waste Management Inc, a major trash collection company, said it canceled pickups in counties across the Midwest on Wednesday and Thursday.

Other states not quite used to cold temperatures, including MS and Alabama, are also preparing for cold conditions and snowfall.

It wasn't stopping one of America's most formidable endurance tests, however - the three-day Arrowhead 135 was going on as scheduled in northeastern Minnesota. Even the South Pole in Antarctica was warmer, with an expected low of minus 24 (minus 31C) with wind chill.

It all started with misplaced Moroccan heat.
