Google blocks 100m Gmail spam emails with TensorFlow

Gmail has announced that it is now able to detect 100 million more spam emails every day. As Google claims that Gmail already blocks 99.99% of spam, so working out that last percentage is hard.

In fact, the firm has insisted it now blocks 99.9 percent of "spam, phishing, and malware from reaching Gmail inboxes" at the moment.

TensorFlow has been added alongside existing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and rule-based filters that Gmail has utilised for years.

Google is adopting its in-house machine learning framework, TensorFlow to help filter additional spam messages for Gmail.

Ball had the best reaction of any Lakers player to the news that he wasn't being traded. "LeBron's hurt, he's getting old". He concluded by saying that if Lonzo gets traded out, the Lakers would "never" win a ring.

With Gmail apparently being used by 1.5 billion users every month, the service has a lot of emails to deal with.

The platform was launched in 2015 by Google and is an open source framework.

"Good security means constantly staying ahead of threats, and our existing ML models are highly effective at doing this-in conjunction with our other protections, they help block more than 99.9 percent of spam, phishing, and malware from reaching Gmail inboxes". 'Within Gmail, we're now experimenting TensorFlow in other security-related areas, such as phishing and malware, as part of our continuous efforts to keep users safe, ' Google explains on its blog. Thus, false positives are becoming rarer and rarer and spam categories that used to be particularly tricky to detect, like emails with hidden embedded content, are slowly vanishing.

Applying ML at scale can be both complex and time consuming which is why TensorFlow contains many components to make ML easier and more efficient.

What kind of additional spam messages did Google now get better at deflecting?

TensorFlow also helps Google personalise spam protection for each user. It's still an impressive achievement, of course, especially when you consider how many unwanted messages it already blocks. But with TensorFlow, Gmail can now look out for user signals to train their servers to learn what appears to be spam for each of them out there.
