But Twitter's base of monthly active users declined to 321 million - a drop of nine million from a year earlier and five million from the prior quarter. The company said it expected total revenue of between $715m and $775m, the midpoint of which was below the Wall Street consensus of $762m.

Dorsey said the company's strategy is centered on four broad objectives: promoting healthy conversation on the platform, making it easier for users to participate in conversations, improving the platform for advertisers and focusing on new technology to improve the service.

Shares of Twitter fell as much as 8% in pre-market trading Thursday following the earnings report.

The company said there was a 16% year-on-year decrease in reports of abuse on Twitter in 2018.

"Video was more than half of ad revenue for Q4 and for 2018", Twitter said in a statement.

The switch to a monetisable daily user count enables Twitter to put a more positive spin on how it's doing, but even there, Twitter gives off the impression that it's trying to paint a slightly rosier picture than reality - at least when it comes to the competition. This time, however, the company has revealed the number of "Monetizable" Daily Active Users, namely those who Twitter can use for targeted advertising. The company made $1.2 billion in profit for the year, its first profitable year since going public in 2013.
